Lionel Maye
Lionel Maye hails from the Paris suburbs. His passion for photography began at the age of 7, when his father gave him his first camera.
This passion has never left him.
At the age of 22, his spirit of adventure took him to Saharan and Black Africa.
A few years later, he embarked on a journey to South America, but never made it, because after crossing 41 of the 48 American states (in one year), he ran out of money…
He then moved to Alaska, attracted by the economic opportunities offered by the construction of a pipeline, thinking he’d be back on his feet in a few months.
But Alaska bewitched him, and since 1980 he’s never left. He worked in a variety of professions (waiter, cook, sommelier, baker, restaurateur) before deciding to devote himself entirely to photography.
With his wife, he founded the Grand Frisson agency, which organizes exceptional photographic trips, with the aim of helping other photographers discover Alaska…
For over 40 years, Lionel has traveled Alaska by boat, snowmobile and floatplane, capturing authentic images of local wildlife, including brown and polar bears.
He refuses to use blinds or photograph baited animals.
In recent years, he has expanded his playground to include the Masai Mara in Kenya, Botswana, the Pantanal in Brazil, Costa Rica and, more recently, India, where he met the tiger.
His expertise and passion for wildlife photography have earned him considerable recognition.
He has exhibited at numerous festivals, and won several awards, including the Audience Award at the prestigious Montier-en-Der festival…
Lionel loves to share his passion and knowledge, because for him photography is a human adventure.
